Facing our Obsession

We are a violent people. In some ways, we have a love affair with violence. It is our obsession. And our obsession is accompanied by the armaments that make our obsession real and operative. Who knows which came first--our obsession or our guns which are everywhere present? Frankly, they live in harmony with each other. Those who think that the easy access to weapons that we have in this country has nothing to do with the number of mass shootings and gun deaths here simply do not pay attention to the reality that the kind of violence we know is not common in most other developed countries. But I would give these folks credit for reminding us that guns are not the only issue. We are addicted to violence and revenge. We love it. We glorify it. We fight an endless number of wars because of our addiction. Let's tell the truth about our addiction and the means by which we live out our addiction. The only way to health is truth telling.
