Living abundantly
In our adult faith formation class we have been talking about life based on scarcity versus life lived based on abundance.
A world based on scarcity is one in which there is always a fear that someone else is getting something that you deserve. In a scarce world, there is only so much to go around, so you better make sure you get your piece of the pie. Scarcity is seen in the suspicion toward immigrants and foreigners of our current political culture. In an abundant world, on the other hand, there is always enough to go around; there is always room for one more. In an abundant world, another person's successes aren't a threat, but a reason for rejoicing. Jesus clearly operated out of abundance. Note the stories about his feeding 5000. Note John's story about his turning water into 120-150 gallons of wine. Wow! This is some party. So much wine that the whole world can drink it. Scarcity, frankly, comes naturally. But it sure is a whole lot less fun than abundance.
