More Than Getting To Heaven
I like these words from Matthew Hester: "How many of us grew up hearing that Christianity was mostly about getting people to heaven?
The more I read the Gospels, the more I notice that Jesus talked far more about the Kingdom than He did about heaven. He didn’t teach His disciples to pray, “Get us out of here.” He taught them to pray, “Your Kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.” That’s a very different emphasis. What if the Gospel isn’t primarily about escaping the world… but about God’s life filling it?What if salvation isn’t simply preparing us to leave creation…but participating in its restoration? What if eternal life isn’t merely about duration…but about sharing in the life of God beginning right now?Jesus didn’t announce evacuation. He announced invasion. The Kingdom has come. Maybe we’ve reduced the Gospel to a destination when Jesus proclaimed an entirely new reality breaking into the present."
