The best pastors are the best people
I always suggested to intern pastors that they consider the insights of Gary Harbaugh that the best pastors are the best people, which means that pastors need to pay attention to their own issues, their own psychology.
Many leaders make decisions on the basis of who they are, not on the basis of the facts on the ground, or the reality that is facing them. Many leadership decisions, whether in the church or in politics, are a matter of the dysfunction of the leader. We need healthy leaders or often we get a big mess. Our church's decision to insist on Clinical Pastoral Education for its pastors is a good move. There future pastors are forced to face themselves. I often wonder if something similar wouldn't be helpful for leaders of all kinds.
