Disciplines of Lent

Last night at my confirmation class, one of our very bright girls asked me how I felt about giving up something for Lent.

I stumbled a bit in response, but finally I said, "Ya, I think it's a good idea. You and I live in a culture in which we can have whatever we want whenever we want. If we want candy, we can get it whenever we want." "You don't live at my house," the girl responded. Wow! I am liking your parents more than I already do. They know that life lived to the fullest sometimes means not having everything whenever we want it. Life is gift. It is not our due. This is what the disciplines of Lent and the season itself try to teach us.
