Character Development

A lot of folks seem to think that the good ethical life is a matter of making the right yes or no decision.

It strikes me, though, that the ethical life is ultimately about character development, which is lived out in such attributes as integrity and authenticity. These attributes are not a once-upon-a-time reality but shape on-going decision making. Although Liz Cheney and I might disagree about many things, I have found her recently to reflect great integrity. She knows that what she has been up to may cost her re-election. But she seeks to be faithful. That, to me, reflects character development.
