Reflections on life and death
An experience today with a person in a nursing home whose life should have come to an end a while ago got me thinking about how we sometimes turn life itself into a god.
It seems to me that part of what is going on when we speak of life beyond death is providing a check on our temptation to absolutize life. Life, while extremely important, is not everything. Or maybe better put, living is not everything. Sometimes there is something worse than death. Sometimes death is life.
